Mamma Mia! The Musical Based on the Songs of ABBA: A Decca Broadway Original Cast Recording (1999 London Cast) $8.24 Put together by Abba’s own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup’s songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she’s trying to identify which of three men is her father. That’s about it. Wisely, the musical doesn’t mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for h… |

Evita: The Complete Motion Picture Music Soundtrack $5.66 Evita was finally filmed in 1996, 20 years after its initial incarnation as a studio-bound rock opera. In between, of course, it was one of the most successful and long-running musicals on either side of the Atlantic. Given such a long history, the film might easily have been a stale anticlimax, fatally holed by our overfamiliarity with songs such as the ubiquitous “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.” O… |

Man of La Mancha: A Decca Broadway Original Cast Album (Original 1965 Broadway Cast) $10.36 Man of La Mancha, the show that introduced “The Impossible Dream” to the world (and lounge singers everywhere), was the hit of the 1965 Broadway season. His leading lad Joan Diener sings the role of the kitchen wench Aldonza with just the right balance of dignity and vulgarity. Irving Ja… |

El Dorado [VHS] $9.95 El Dorado doesn’t quite have the scope or ambition of Howard Hawks’s greatest Westerns, Red River and Rio Bravo. But this relaxed picture, made near the end of Hawks’s marvelous career, still shows the steady, sure hand of a master. Hawks reunites with John Wayne, playing a hired gun mixed up in a range war; Robert Mitchum is Wayne’s old pal, now a sheriff in the midst of a hopeless drunken bender… |

12 Angry Men [VHS] $4.94 Sidney Lumet’s directorial debut remains a tense, atmospheric (though slightly manipulative and stagy) courtroom thriller, in which the viewer never sees a trial and the only action is verbal. As he does in his later corruption commentaries such as Serpico or Q & A, Lumet focuses on the lonely one-man battles of a protagonist whose ethics alienate him from the rest of jaded society. As the film op… |
