How to Breed Neon Tetra, A Flaring Ornamental Fish
Neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi or Hyphessobrycon innesi) is a freshwater fish of the characin family (family Characidae) of order Characiformes. This type species of fish is native to blackwater or clearwater streams in southeastern Colombia, eastern Peru, and western Brazil, including the tributaries of the Solimões where the water is between 20–26 °C (68–79 °F).
The color of Neon Tetra body is luminous and looks so spectacular. This fish has soft green dorsal (back) with light blue stripe along its body. Its abdomen (belly) was white and between the base of the tail to the top colored red. Its fins are transparent and colorless. Neon Tetra’s body length can reach to 3 cm.
Neon Tetra can live in various water conditions. It is quite tolerant to pH and temperature changes. However, this fish is so difficult to spawn in unsuitable environtmental conditions. The optimal temperature for spawning range between 23-24 ° C and the hardness is very low, about 3 dH, because the original habitat of Neon Tetra was poor of mineral. While the pH of the water is around 5.5 to 6.0.
The male and female Neon Tetra can be distinguished clearly. The males has a straight blue line at its body, while the female the blue line is bent. Neon tetra breeding can be done in pairs in a small aquarium with a male and female ratio 1: 1. The broodstocks may be spawned when they are ready (their gonads have matured).
It is no need to fed the broodstocks when they are spawned, to keep the water clean. You can put water plants into aquarium (not recommended), as eggs substrat. But the plants must be cleaned before. Because the broodstock has a habit to eat its own eggs, then place the aquarium in the quite dark room, so the broodstocks can not see them. The broodstocks is usually spawn in the evening or night.
After the broodstocks has spawned, they should move to other tank (aquarium). The eggs will hatch in 24 hours. It is no need to aerate the water in spawning tank to keep pH stable. If it should, do with smaller bubles.
The larvae that produced has transparent body and quite difficult to see. The larvae is not too tolerant to strong light, so keep them in the dim or dark area.
On the day-4 the larvae may be fed life foods. The first life food can be fed is infusoria, which is fed for three days, then continuing with filtered artemia or daphnia. The feed for larvae rearing is bigger daphnia or moina.
Neon Tetra has a fast growth as long as it is kept in the optimal conditions. The fry rearing or growing can be started when it reached 3-4 weeks old. At that age the fry can be kept in a more light area, but still have to shade. Neon Tetra could be sold to consumer when it reached size of 1.8 cm in length or 2 1/2 month in age.
